Happy Birthday Holy Trinity

DIANNE MESH

Today Holy Trinity is celebrating 160 years of ministry in this place. During that time this church has struggled, more than once, for its own survival and, even more often (one might even say continuously), to nurture faith, community and justice among the most vulnerable and excluded people in the church and in the world around. So it is a proud history that we share, a rich heritage of commitment to making a real difference in the life of the world.

Let's celebrate that today. Even if just for today, let's lay the burden of struggle down and enter, as best as we are able, into a spirit of unrestrained rejoicing. There will be lots of work for us to do tomorrow (after all, there has been no shortage of it for the past 160 years) but let's declare this a day of rest. Let's make this a day to relax and enjoy the miracle of faithful enduring community that God and many generations of parishioners at Holy Trinity have created together.

Sometimes, there's the temptation to believe that God approves of us only when we are hard at work trying to fix ourselves, the church or the world. We forget that God created us for love and community, and for all the joy and delight that love and community affords. We forget that God rejoices, not just at brilliant final achievements but at our faithful pursuit of a holy vision, and our big and little accomplishments along the way.

Holy Trinity has been alive in the heart of the city for 160 years and has made a difference in many lives. Let's pause to celebrate that before we take up the burden of struggle again.

Happy Anniversary, Holy Trinity!
