One Chaos at A Time
SARA BOYLES
Sometimes I feel I understand the chaos that the Genesis story refers to “In the beginning...”.
My desk is piled high with files, folders and papers. A card table holds the overflow (mostly about Holy Week and Easter but with a few pairs of children’s scissors, crosses and feathers thrown in). There are boxes behind the filing cabinet and trinkets behind the books. Perhaps I should let out a few large groans and get to cleaning up.
Letting the weight of it all pile up seems easier and the path of least resistence. The groans are the hard part. Releasing the tension and allowing another possibility to enter, allowing a new tomorrow, trusting beyond the moment, beyond what I can see. Living into the new hope that I profess and into the greater power of the divine.
The discipline of it all, whether it be reducing clutter, losing weight, or developing the habit of prayer is one of the places we need the support of each other and some grasp of knowing that support is there. It is not trite to say “day by day” or “one day at a time”. Sometimes it is more like one second at a time and that is what has been reinforced in me this week as I have travelled about the parish and engaged with so many different folks.
Bonnie Briggs pointed out at the book launch of Cathy Crowe’s book “Dying for a Home” that she and Kerre have been housed for 18 years and she has accomplished a lot in that time. Yet she reminded us all that we need an attitude of gratefulness for what we have. We don’t live onto ourselves or for ourselves. We are pulled, magnetically perhaps, towards one another, into community like the community of God as we know it in the Christian tradition - Father Son and Holy Spirit, Mother, Lover and Friend.
