Easter Afterglow

SARA BOYLES
A big thanks to everyone who made Holy Week and Easter celebrations so rich and alive this past week end. It truly was a spectacle of love and adoration - one event tripping into another (and many of us tripping into one another). It was our first major attempt to work together with our Hispanic community and I hope that many of you felt enriched by the contact. Special thanks go to Becca, Leonel and Scott for the massive amounts of work they did to prepare the service bulletins.

In hindsight, one can always see how things might be done differently another time. For example, we might want to consider how we prepare those who have not been engaged in the conversations about widening our tent and learning new ways of worshipping and working with another community. We may want to buddying with folks of the “other” linguistic tradition so our attempts to sing and speak together could be supported by people sitting around us.

Today, we focus on the welcoming of Willem Hugh Jansen into the Christian community. His Aunt Mary-Ann, an ordained minister in the United Church will baptize him. Mary-Ann also baptized Nazric here at the Easter Vigil in 2004. It is a gentle reminder that our baptism is not into a denomination but into the whole of the Christian family. It is a symbol of a broad tent, how be it, one threatened these days by tears in the fabric.

In the face of international, divisive church politics, I continue to believe in the strength of small communities, loosely joined, where people attempt to live Christian lives with the help and support of Mother Sophia who blows where she wills. I continue to give thanks for all of those who wrestle with the faith they have inherited. A mature faith is not born easily. Our lives are messy and wonderful, broken and glorious, understandable and beyond our control. Walking together brings hope and the possibility for healing. Welcome Willem!
