Tiptoe Past the D***** Store

SARA BOYLES
Monday, in the snowstorm, I stopped by Kid's Costumes on Mt. Pleasant and bought 2 pirate's hats. I packaged them and mailed them to the grand boys in Vancouver. Now, these aren't the hand made hats I promised (I am still working on the sleeves of a now-too-small winter sweater) but they are pirate's hats, hats I promised to create at Christmas time. I had also warned Sue that I might buy the hats and cut out the labels (kids are smart these days). s my pretending to have made them as ethical as the pretend play they shall enjoy and indulge in?

The reason I feel good about these particular hats (and I hope the size is right so they will survive several seasons) is that I didn't succumb to the Disney Store and imported costumes with copyright designs. I must say though if I had thought about it (like the man who weighed my parcel and stamped it) it would have been an easy alternative. He bought his grandson the whole outfit- vest, pants, sword and boots at Disney, along with a hat for himself. Instead, I heard the sewing machines whirring in the background and knew I had a home-grown product.

Leaving a small imprint on this earth and directing our resources where we want them to go is not as simple as it looks. Nor is the living simple as magazine's and articles suggest. It means living in awareness and
transforming "trouble" (remembering to take the bags to the store) to routine and even pleasure. The pleasure comes when it becomes a life style choice which involves changing use of time along with everything else, not a should done at the end of a long and tiring day. Although I would argue the "should" is better than doing nothing. The pleasure part is also about the moment of recognition that we have an amazing world to live in and we can affect its well being. Development towards the good is not a matter of either or but learning, growing and changing. It is the story of human kind.
