Incarnation, a Frequent Occurance

SARA BOYLES
I look at a recent picture of Granddaughter Vivian and realize she is a year old. No longer an infant who lays quietly in the arms but a lively, busy little person with a crooked grin and piercing eyes. Christmas ornaments move at a great rate from tree branch to floor only to be returned by her brothers to their places on the lower branches of the family tree. Lego constructs are only safe "up high" and it seems she fits nicely on a refrigerator shelf.

This is incarnation - life giving, vibrant and free. Vivian comes into a house of love and blessing but so many children, like the child of Bethlehem are born into a world of terror and scarcity. Their birth is marred by illness, their potential limited by poor diet and sanitation, their options curtailed by family need and poverty. Yet it is one of those children in whom the face of God was etched most clearly. It is one of those children who shows what will be here forever (The poor you will always have with you...). It is one of those children we worship and adore and bring into our heart homes.

Mysterious and veiled, God appears. Vulnerable and helpless, God relies on us to turn the world right side up. The impoverished, the weak, the lonely are us and we too, like Vivian are the face of God, nvited to participate in the dance of love.

Love us forever,
hold us for always,
teach us your ways.

May your season be blessed.
Sara
