As Happy as Kings?
SARA BOYLES
Dear Friends,
"The world is full of such wonderful things, I'm sure we should all be as
happy as kings"
Robert Louis Stevenson wrote those words before the age of modern media with its instant communication and plethora of bad news stories. Darkness and destruction seem to threaten all that there is to enjoy. Focussing on the hopeful and life-giving becomes as important as exercise for your body and reading for your mind.
Focussing on the life giving does not imply abandoning responsibility for this world we live in. Our good news is news of incarnation, justice and community. The way ahead is a plan of action, not inaction. The way ahead is to celebrate who we are and whose we are. As a community, we have much to do this coming year. I hope that you will attend the parish day on Nov. 4 to help map it out and to enter a discussion about how we best deploy our resources. Child care is lined up. It would be helpful to know how many children will be coming. Speak to Joyce, Sara or Ron. More details later.
This morning I was previewing a program from the Episcopal Church of the U.S. called Via Media. It presented a variety of Anglican perspectives on the basic concepts of our faith. It was thoughtful and provoking. I wanted to stop and line up my ideas viv a vis the ones presented. (It might be a choice for a Lenten study.) One woman talked about a party she had been to at the US General Convention. She attended a party with lots of dancing and moving and joie de vivre. None was talking in intense and hushed tones. No one seemed worried about the particular beliefs and disbeliefs of others. The party spoke of God's people gathered, a brief experience of God's realm here and now. That experience has many other faces as well - a break through in our understanding of who we are, a moment of divine connection, ordinary people doing ordinary things, a movement for justice (not judgement), receiving bread and wine in the circle. But I'm getting into the discussion which follows the stimulation offered by the program. Back to this day and its opportunity.
All for now, Sara November 30, 1999 |
