Mother's Day

SARA BOYLES
Mother's Day like so many "days" in our culture has become laden with
commercial baggage - fancy cards, meals out, expensive flowers and gifts. I
think of those first servant women in England who were allowed to go home on
this day, as a special concession, to see their families after months of
indenture. It was a day of liberation based on justice principles.

Our world is in as much need today of justice. For every person eating out
there are several people who must work to make that happen. Many of those
who need to work live marginal lives on marginal wages. Keep pushing back
and we get hard working farmers and coffee bean growers who eke out a living
on less and less land. I think of the farm land it takes to grow all of
those beautiful flowers in those beautiful bouquets.

Mother's Day can be a fun, a family recognition of love and care. Many
families keep it simple or try to ignore it in a culture gone mad. Children
enjoy making cards and making breakfast. Mom's tend to enjoy extra hugs. I
like the day so I can remember my Mom with whom I had a difficult
relationship for so many years. I relish the fact I am in a different place
and can appreciate her tenacity, bravery and love so much more completely.

Among my Mom's favourite things were her collection of Royal Dolton dolls.
She loved them so much she kept them behind glass and was always afraid they
would get broken while being dusted and admired. As a result they led a
lonely existence supervising all activities in Mom's living room. What I
have behind glass, in my living room is a dime store replica of a Royal
Doulton china doll. It has been glued back together and the lady has chips
out of her skirt. This doll my mother felt able to touch and handle. She
would leave it in the open and enjoy her colour and form. She would even let
grown ups touch her rippling skirt! This doll helped my Mom feel like a
lady. To me she is precious reminder that our beautiful treasures contain
stories of love, justice and pain. trouble and beauty.

This day let us choose beauty and pray for women through all times who
created our legacy, who bear our lives in the most difficult of
circumstances and who give us strength to carry on. Let us pray for
ourselves too that we continue to seek rooted and healthy, living not only
for ourselves but connected to the whole world, seen and unseen.
