Love One Another in Truth and Action

SARA BOYLES
The memorial service for my dear friend Betsy was yesterday in Windsor. She was a thoughtful Texan, quite unlike the Texans we are familiar with through the media and our imaginations. Her daddy was a farmer. Through his hands she was well connected to the earth, her faith and her family. She made a mean chocolate pecan pie that had a meringue under crust.

A quiet introvert, discovering her calling was not easy. She began her adult life as a home economist. I met her when she was studying theology at Yale. Her husband was at the music school. With them I explored (affordable) New York and attended concert halls that until that time had been only names. Late in the night we would amuse ourselves with word games as we drove back to New Haven in their Volkswagen van.

Betsy truly came into herself as cancer entered her body. That was many years ago. There was something about the persistent nature of that disease that helped her understand the great frailty and great resilience within her. It was not with an aggressive show of power that she fought the disease but a focus and love that shone through her. At her sickest she used every medical means at her disposal as a gift, designed for her. She was relentless in her insistence on life to the fullest.

In turn, Betsy helped those around her resist their fear with gentleness, opportunity and support. She was awed by the generosity of her church community and her family. They in turn felt the privilege of each day with her. I certainly did. I know I will remember her with each chocolate sheet cake I bake for the Sunday Breakfast. I will also remember her for the way she lived out what she saw as the gospel core - to love one another in truth and action. She was one gospel lady with a passion for chocolate and life. I will miss her.
