Living in Diversity with Respect

SARA BOYLES
Special days, according to the calendar, are spread throughout the year at appropriate intervals. In Canada, we manage a long week end or special day nearly once a month. Some of those holidays lack significance for me. Other days seem more important. Just last week National Aboriginal Day, Pride Week and Canada Day fell on top of each other and started the summer with a rush.

What happens is that none of them get the space or time for reflection I would like. The true issues each raises get swept by in the fury of keeping up and the "brand of the minute" secular philosophy of the world around me. There is a political face to each of those issues. Not the one we are generally led to believe but deeper ones which affect the fabric of society as we know it.

Thanks to all of you who organize your lives differently than I do. I am aware I need those who enjoy digging into those deeper issues and presenting them to me. I need Kairos to strategize for me. I need people in my life who do things differently, who think differently, who have a different theology than I do. They lead me into questions I might not necessarily ask.

For me this has been one of the strengths of the Anglican Church, to live in diversity with respect. However, in the present climate of real hatred and distrust I see shallow unity and I don't believe it to be worth pursuing. Getting on with a satisfying division between groups of Anglicans seems to be a way ahead. Perhaps that could even lead to some other kind of unity in the future beyond the one I can "ask for or imagine". Can we change ourselves with the grace and hope we want for churches who are being asked to close? I shall watch and see how this is modelled for us.

Sara
