Living Into Life
SARA BOYLES
Days tumble over each other in a mixture of things. Oh, for the organization that keeps me focussed on the most important and makes me immune to the whims of the moment. At least that is what I think! The problem is I play this game - a personal version of "the grass is greener" or "the glass is half full". The game is quite a distractor from living each moment in its fullness, from choosing life itself.
And what is life if it is not acting out the passions and concerns of the moment. What is life if it is not living into life, no matter the circumstance. As I walk alongside folks I become aware of the choices each of us gets to make. There is always at least one option which is about choosing life even though it may be discouraging, feel horribly slow and require much effort. Choosing life does not mean getting our own way but taking in the moment, being filled with the moment and understanding the moment with its potential for grace. Life is not always what it seems.
Helen Cram always reminded me of that. In our conversations about one of her passions - life as a waking dream - we often turned to the symbolism of each day and those symbols we take for granted. She was grounded too in the need for practical action. Peace Education and Resource Centre, another of her passions, sent information kits to schools and agencies that worked with children throughout this land. She tried to live each day to the fullest.
What does this have to do with my game? Perhaps I need to remember that life is not a game and yet it is a game. I need to remember that work and play mingle into pleasure, and friendships are the building blocks for every future. Live life your way and let others do the same. Then we begin to understand interdependence and the gift of each other.
