"Woke up"

SARA BOYLES
One morning recently Xander said with great awe to his Mom, "Woke up Mommy, woke up." Then after examining the room in which his Mom and baby Isaac were still lying abed he said, "Baby Isaac woke up too." I keep going back to this because I am so impressed with the wisdom of toddlers. He knew instinctively the Easter message. He got the awesome nature of life right. He understood, at two and a half, the wondrous fact that we live and we wake up every day. He knew we have the chance to renew each morning, another chance to live life fully and richly.

What happens to us between the time we were two and our present age? I believe we lose that sense of integrity and unity of those early years. Then, after we have pulled it all apart, we begin to yearn for it to come together again. In the process we get discouraged or hurt or broken. Sometimes or often times we don't know how to pick the pieces up. We don't know how to breathe life into our bones and sinews, our minds and our hearts. We feel like we are surviving, not living. Old passions die and we hesitate to let go. We have been taught there is some virtue in holding on. In some cases there is, in others not. If we only knew the difference and could be sure of the outcome. At the same time many of us get scared at the notion of risking or stretching ourselves. We get scared when the new takes time to find or the journey becomes even more intense and difficult. We have trouble seeing ourselves reach the goal.

I am sure that we must find the way for ourselves. I am sure we need a community to hold us as we wallow about. I am sure that there is a way forward in the midst of the most awful circumstances. Sometimes I am convinced we need to become more sensitized to our own rhythms and cadences. We need to treat our bodies as we would the finest instruments or the finest wines. At the same time we need to walk alongside others. They are our key to finding our life. This is not new but wisdom handed down through the ages by Jesus.

Listen this season and find where you are being called. Follow, timidly or bravely but follow. We are called to life and hope and love.
