Lent is About Change
SARA BOYLES
Have you adjusted to putting away the Alleluias this Lent or are they sneaking out of your lips Sunday mornings when everyone else is saying "Amen"? Change comes hard for some of us whether it is in our corporate or personal life. I have heard it said that it is not the change it is getting there, making the new familiar, incorporating it into our repertoire, growing easy with new ways of doing things.
Change is one of the things that Lent is about. It is really not about giving up something or even adding something on. It is about examining ourselves and our corporate life to see where the adjustments need to be made. If we are doing too much then it is a short period to practice doing a little less. If you are feeling bored with life, it is a chance to take on something else and fill out your time differently. Maybe you want to switch from an evening of TV to one of reading, from detective shows to the news. Whatever it is, it is discipline and practice, a time to remind ourselves that life is always changing and nothing stands still, even those things which we try to anchor and keep the same forever.
We live in the era of personal trainers, not only for our bodies but for our lives and careers. I shake my head and wonder what happened to good friends and mentors and family. Then I am reminded of the distances between people who live in individual apartments (cells?) and those who have family far away. I think about people who work long hours or never had the opportunity to live in depth with chosen people. I think of our society's measurement of success and how that affects what I call true quality of life. I see these "personal coaches" as secular spiritual directors or soul friends.
In the church there are still those who will walk alongside you on your journey. There are still retreat centres where you can go for renewal and rest. There are any number of courses within striking distance of Toronto. Whatever you plan for this summer however, plan on attending the Parish Weekend May 13 - 15. Mark your book now. You won't be disappointed by this opportunity to play and reflect with this community for a week end. Details will come later.
See you at the annual meeting next Sunday after church. Be sure to pick up your report today before you leave.
