Small and Subtle Changes
SARA BOYLES
On this vacation I will attend a Sunday service at St. James , Piccadilly. There are several indicators that it will seem familiar. At the bottom of its mission statement it says "We don't manage it all the time, so we try again.". When my friend phoned to find out the time of service the answering message said that they start about 11 but certainly don't finish at 12. And if that is a problem for you, then simply leave. Lastly, when mt friend says that we are attending there people ask her, "Why?"
I believe I already know why I want to be there. I expect to find real people struggling to be faithful in a world where the intersection of faith and life isn't easy. I expect to find a community wrestling to breathe new life into the words of scripture and tradition. I expect to find a community engaged with the world around it. I expect to find some sceptical folks, still seeking to make sense of all that is seen and unseen. I expect to find some folks for whom the old wine skins don't fit.
It feels good to be slightly askew in this world - but what feels even better is to walk with a community who also see the world in a broken way: where greed and over consumption are not idolized; where the small, the unfortunate and the margins get lifted up; and where all of life is not stuffed into a box and tied up with a bright ribbon.
For many years I was an excellent at putting everything beautifully into a box and tying it round with a big, fat ribbon. Now my gifts tend to arrive wrapped in crumpled tissue or recycled gift wrap held together with string or a beautiful nearly-new ribbon. They are much more reflective of the community I belong to and the way I want to live. It's funny how changes comes subtly and appears in odd, small ways.
We are all changed by the things we celebrate. I hope you are aware of your journey this Lent. See you next week.
