"Bring me a boat. I need to get away."
SARA BOYLES
This past two weeks I feel I have attended many meetings. I have promised to do many things. In solemn reflection I hope I remember to do them all. Sometimes the doing distracts from the being - yet without enough of each my life gets out of whack. I have not reached that magical, elusive place of balance. I take some comfort in the fact that Jesus got out of balance as well. He would be in the middle of a crowd, clamouring for his wisdom and suddenly he announces to his disciples, "Bring a boat. I need to get away." It couldn't have been easy on those around him.
In this wintry season (and after a stewardship meeting last night) I realize that I need to talk to you about balance and community. You are a generous lot. While our offerings from within the community last year were slightly lower than the year before, you give of yourselves in acts of generosity and hope in so many ways. From caring for the sick, visiting those shut-in and infirm, to changing light bulbs and counting money - you are everywhere. You indeed are the parish and move in a dance with one another, sometimes taking more, sometimes less but always sufficient so the parish can make beautiful music as a unit.
During this epiphany season there is much flurry. The nominating committee is asking many of you to take responsible parish positions over the coming years(s). The stewardship committee is asking that, as well, you see that your church donation is in line with your wishes (and parish needs). The Sunday School co-ordinator is looking for teachers and the contemplative prayer group is working to develop a small, core praying community. Worship is seeking new life in liturgy development. I could go on....
Be sure to mark your date books for the Parish Council on March 6 after church (budget for 2005), the vestry meeting on February 27 and the Parish Week-end (lots of fun, new and old, affordable) May 13-15. No excuses to not be there!
Looking forward to what this week brings,
Sara
PS. I just wanted to let you know I am taking my winter week of holiday and study leave in mid-February. November 30, 1999 |
